ABOUT US

The Tomahawks Youth Lacrosse Club sponsors Youth Lacrosse Teams for boys and girls from third grade through high school. Our players come primarily from the Mid Peninsula, including Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Woodside, Los Altos, Atherton, and Mountain View. The Tomahawks were one of the first club teams founded in Northern California in 1989, and they have been one of the largest and most successful club teams since that time. The Tomahawks Boys High School team has won the Northern California Championship 4 of the last 6 years. The Tomahawks is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, run by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Membership: Membership in the Club is open to boys and girls in grades 3-12 throughout the Peninsula. Team eligibility is determined by the player's grade in the current school year, not by age. There is no geographic restrictions, and although anyone can join the Tomahawks, we encourage players from outside our main catchment area to play with their local team. Registration occurs in the Fall for the season (which lasts from February-May).

Coaches:  We have over 15 coaches with Division 1 college lacrosse experience, several former men and women All Americans, and even a few current and recent professional lacrosse coaches in our ranks.

League: The Tomahawks Club is one of 60 clubs that belong to the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA), the governing body for youth lacrosse clubs in Northern California. These teams are located throughout Northern California, from Monterey to Marin, and from San Francisco to Sacramento.

Philosophy: We believe that lacrosse is a special game, as did the Native Americans who invented the game over 600 years ago.  We think the game is an opportunity to develop our players mentally, physically, and emotionally.  We play to honor the game and respect our teammates and our opponents, and to make our ourselves better athletes and better individuals. We do not believe in the 'professionalization of youth sports'. We expect and hope that kids will play sports other than just lacrosse.  We believe there is a role for kids of all ranges of athletic talent to have a great experience on the lacrosse field.  While we are thrilled to provide an environment to enable outstanding players to pursuit lacrosse at higher levels, we are also equally happy to see kids who will enjoy lacrosse as a youth player.  Lacrosse is not what is important; it is the experiences that kids will have to learn how to motivate and challenge themselves, to play as part of a team, and to strive to be their best.

Team Structure: The Tomahawks field teams in the following age divisions. These teams play other age and skill-level appropriate teams from throughout Northern California in games, tournaments, and jamborees. In many age groups, we sponsor more than 1 team, depending on interest level and signups. In 2007, we sponsored 11 teams with nearly 250 players. We expect to grow once again in 2008. We keep strict limits on the number of players per team to make sure everyone has a quality experience.

Season: Typically, each team plays from 12-15 games over the course of the season. Within a given age division, the league sponsors different skill level leagues, ranging from 'A' (most competitive), to 'C' (developmental). League standings are kept, and the NCJLA sponsors year end playoffs for all levels which culminate in the Northern California and California Club Championship Tournaments. The NCJLA and US Lacrosse name All Star teams, as well as All American players at the end of season. Many Tomahawks players have gone on to play college lacrosse. Our team colors are green and gold.

Our home field is Gunn High School in Palo Alto, but we practice and play on fields in Portola Valley, Menlo Park and Woodside. Here are maps to our playing fields.

Games begin in March and last through May and we will be holding several special clinics for players in the off season (October - January) to allow them to start or continue working on their skills.
